FAQ Nursery

At what age can children be accepted in the day-nursery?
We take infants from about one year old. Due to staggered start dates for the introductory  period children born in October or November may also be considered.it is recommended that any child born at a later date be put on a waiting list or registered for the next year.

How does the familiarization phase work?
Familiarization in our day-nursery takes place in accordance with the Berlin model, which takes into consideration the needs of an individual child and lasts about 4 to 6 weeks. The initial days are for orientation and getting to know the group. The parents accompany their child and provide a sense of security. The first (short) separation generally takes place in the second week. The time in which the parents are absent are then gradually extended. During this period the children can rely on one particular teacher.

What is the daily schedule?
7.30 – 8.30  Arrival time (from 7.30 – 8.00 both groups remain together)

8.30 – 10.00 Play time with supervision and breakfast

10.15   Organized morning get-together

10.30 – 11.00  Outdoor activities (we go in the garden in all weathers)

11.15  Lunch

11.45 – 14.00  Rest time

14.00 – 17.00  Games, snack, outdoor play or in activity room

How does the bilingual idea work with the nursery children?
It works very well. Each group has one English-speaking pedagogue who addresses the children in English.  If it’s clear that the child doesn’t understand the statement or question is translated into German and repeated in English. The children accept the foreign language and may soon repeat some of the words.

How many children and teachers are there in each group?
Each group consists of 13 children and 3 teachers. We also have varying assistants.

Should the children bring their own food?
We provide a freshly cooked lunch every day from our own kitchen. The children need to bring a snack for the morning and afternoon.

How does the afternoon rest work?
Each child has his/her own space and brings his/her own cover (and maybe a soft toy) from home. At about 12 o’clock all the children go to another room and lie down. That usually works very well, but if a  child is unable to sleep he/she can play in the group room.

Can my child move from the nursery to the kindergarten during the year?
Generally the switch from nursery to kindergarten is in September. There are however exceptional circumstances.
